Director of Athletics

Elms College is seeking a creative, dedicated professional to serve as our director of athletics. Reporting to the vice president of student affairs the athletic director will be responsible for planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of all aspects of the recreational, intramural and intercollegiate sports programs. Elms is an NCAA Division III institution sponsoring 15 intercollegiate sports.

The ideal candidate will be a strong and collaborative leader and administrator who recognizes the importance of an athletic program that is aligned with the mission and strategic goals of the institution. Duties include budget development and management; facilities management; game administration; hiring, training, and supervision of department coaches/staff; ensuring compliance with federal, NCAA and conference regulations, and ensuring that recruitment goals are met and roster sizes maintained.

Qualifications

Minimum of a master's degree is required, plus five years of athletic administrative experience at the collegiate level, preferably at a Division III institution. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. The ideal candidate will have budgetary experience as well as knowledge/experience with regulatory/compliance issues. This is a 12-month position. Background check will be conducted; valid driver's license and good driving record required. Position requires weekend and evening work.

Director of Residence Life (12/23/2011)

Elms College is seeking a creative, dedicated student development professional to serve as our director of residence life. As a member of the student affairs team, the director will be responsible for the overall planning, management, and assessment of the residence life program. In addition to providing direct services to students, the director is responsible for adjudicating on campus student conduct violations. The director supervises an assistant director, graduate assistant and 12 undergraduate resident advisors. The director may also be charged with assisting to develop and administer a summer conference program. The director works closely with all departments on campus.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree is required, (master’s degree preferred,) plus 1-3 yrs of related professional experience, preferably in residence life at the college level. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as knowledge of our ability to learn relevant technology. The successful candidate must be personable, effective in fostering collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff. This is a full time, 12-month, live-in position. A comprehensive background check will be conducted for this position. Position requires weekend and evening work.

Anticipated start date is on or before 7/2/12.

Major Gifts Officer (11/10/11)

The major gifts officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major donor prospects in support of Elms College initiatives. The individual designs and executes plans for achieving an annual fundraising goal from assigned benefactors and devises assessment strategies to advance newly identified prospects from potential donors to actual donors. He or she, manages a portfolio of major gift prospects, and is responsible for associated proposals, marketing pieces and all communication follow-up. The Officer collaborates with members of the Institutional Advancement team and other college officials to create relationship paths that utilize key institutional and volunteer solicitors effectively. He or she ensures integration of major giving activities with other development programs such as Annual Giving and Legacy Giving. Additionally, the Officer assists in defining major gift priorities and provides ongoing promotion of major giving program.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with and plays a key role in the overall development and implementation of strategic plans to expand fundraising capacity at the college. Central to the growth and expansion is the ability to understand all aspects of an effective development program, including annual giving, capital gifts (including those in support of physical plant and endowment needs), and planned giving.
  • Designs and executes plans for identification, cultivation, and solicitation of alumni, parents, and friends of the college who have the capacity to make a major gift in the form of outright gifts (cash / securities / real property) or multi-year pledges for prioritized college projects in order to meet the goals of the institution.
  • Manages a portfolio of 175-200 prospects; travels 80 percent of the time and is involved in soliciting benefactors personally, or as appropriate, accompanies other college officials or volunteer solicitors. Maintains a minimum personal visitation schedule of 15 face-to-face meetings per month with existing and potential benefactors and performs all appropriate follow-up.
  • Initiates methods to develop an assigned pool of major gifts prospects for the purpose of elevating individual gift level of actual and anticipated support of $25,000 or more.
  • Assists in securing all levels of annual fund contributions with focus on high-end annual gift prospects and benefactors as part of major gift solicitation and negotiation in accordance with the college's gift policy.
  • Prepares proposals, presentations, and written materials, including correspondence, acknowledgements, and other systematic communications within the major gifts stewardship program. 
  • Collaborates with institutional marketing to create marketing pieces advocating and promoting the concept of major giving program.
  • Works independently and at the same time under the direction of the director of development and legacy giving to establish and assess an operating plan with measurable performance objectives.
  • Motivates, manages, and mobilizes volunteer leadership and inspires confidence and trust among key benefactor constituencies.
  • Collaborates with the Institutional Advancement team and other members of the college's community in all tactical plans to increase the level of participation and involvement of alumni, friends, parents, and corporations.
  • Reactivates, retains, and builds stronger relationships with current benefactors and prospects thereby growing the benefactor base to yield greater support of the college.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in fundraising or relevant transferable skills from a closely related field such as sales, marketing or communications. Proven track record of major gift cultivation and solicitation preferred. Experience with a private college and experience in Catholic higher education is preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and successfully interact with donors, prospects, alumni, trustees, corporate and community leaders, professional peers, and colleagues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of gift solicitation and related financial planning and gift recording.
  • Must be self-motivated, goal oriented, and willing to travel.
  • Ability to work independently; demonstrates initiative, and exercises sound, independent judgment.
  • Empathetic, able to relate well and with compassion for others; detail-oriented; persevering and enthusiastic nature.
  • Proven problem solving, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated success in relationship building and collaboration.
  • Positive attitude, a sense of humor, and a desire to have fun while reaching established goals.
  • High level professional integrity.
  • Ability to travel within the region and outside the area to other parts of the country and work outside normal business hours.
