About The Region
The Pioneer Valley region encompasses numerous diverse cities and towns along the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts. The valley is famous for its rich history, its contributions to the industrial world, its emergence as a place of learning and culture, and its natural beauty. For Elms students and visitors, though, the allure of the Pioneer Valley lies in everything it has to offer to help students get away for a while and relax. According to the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Pioneer Valley is the place to be "whether you crave the thrill of heart-pumping attractions or the serenity of soothing distractions." With everything from thrilling attractions to fascinating arts and entertainment, outstanding outdoor recreation and great shopping - the Pioneer Valley is a wonderful place to compliment your Elms experience.
In our own corner of the Pioneer Valley sits Chicopee, Massachusetts, a city just outside of Springfield, known best for its role as the hub for numerous industries, including cotton mills, woolen mills, textiles, brass and iron foundries, paper making, leather products, matches, ship building, and swords and firearms. This industrial heritage is still carried on in some places, but the city for the most part has given way to a more modern pace of life while still retaining a small-town New England feel. The past has forged the town and its residents into a strong, hard-working community that takes pride in Chicopee and everything it has to offer today, which includes Elms College.
