2010 Honors Convocation Recipients

CHERYL R. CONDON LEADERSHIP AWARD - Allyson Graffum

This award honors a female student who has completed at least four semesters at Elms College with a minimum grade point average of 2.67, and demonstrates leadership and integrity both on and off the Elms College campus.

Sisters of St. Joseph SERVICE AWARD - Colette Green
This award reflects the spirit and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph, "That All May Be One." It recognizes a student who is of service to others, brings positive change to our campus and beyond, and unites neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. The recipient of this award may be nominated by a faculty member or a fellow student.

ST. CATHERINE MEDAL - Kayla Moreau '11
The recipient of this award, nominated by faculty members, is a junior who has demonstrated leadership and service to his/her college. This award is sponsored by Kappa Gamma Pi. The medal depicts the traditional patroness of Kappa Gamma Pi, St. Catherine of Alexandria, encircled by the wheel of her legendary martyrdom and holding a quill and scroll, which symbolize learning and wisdom.

MARY CONNORS VIAMARI AWARD - Danielle Gero
This award is presented to a student from the Holyoke area in memory of a dedicated alumna and Holyoke teacher, Mary Connors Viamari, Class of 1950. It was established by her husband, Robert J. Viamari, and Violette Cartier Sweeney, friend and classmate.

THE MARGUERITE O. CARSON AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN SOCIAL WORK - Jasmine Batista
This award has been established to recognize a graduating social work major who has overcome obstacles and shown significant personal growth and development while at the Elms and made important contributions to classes, as well as to their fellow students. The award honors Marguerite O. Carson, a long time social work practitioner in the Greater Springfield area, who served as faculty and Social Work Advisory Board member.

O'CONNOR/JOYCE SOCIAL WORK STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD - Jean Rogers
This award is given to a graduating Social Work major who has attained a minimum 3.2 grade point average; has been an inspiration to her/his classmates; has contributed to the development of the Social Work Program, the College, and the civic community; and who has the potential to make a significant contribution to the Social Work profession. The award was established to honor Father Vincent O'Connor and Sister John Martha Joyce, s.s.j., founders of the Elms Social Work Program.

THE CARTIER FAMILY AWARD - Ben Masse
This award is given to a deserving student in the Chicopee/Holyoke area. It was established at the time of death of Orphir Cartier, father of three alumnae and a corporator of Elms College.

LYNE-MURPHY MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE AWARD - Kathleen Maloney
This award has been established in honor of the late Mary Anne (Lyne) Murphy and Henry T. Murphy by their ten children in the Murphy, Hayes, and Alexander families. This award is presented to a graduating senior who excels in Mathematics and/or Computer Information Technology at the Elms.

AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY AWARD - T. Ryan Sullivan
This award is presented to a graduating chemistry major who has done outstanding work in the field. The award is sponsored by the Connecticut Valley section of the Society and is presented in each of the colleges and universities in the region. The award includes a certificate, one year of society membership, a journal subscription, and recognition at an award luncheon.

THE MARY E. SCANLON PRIZE - T. Ryan Sullivan
This award is given to a graduating senior majoring in the sciences who has demonstrated the highest academic achievement in science. The endowment making possible the award was established by members of the Scanlon family.

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTRY - Amber Hartblay
This award recognizes a graduating chemistry major for scholastic achievement, as well as an outstanding record of leadership, ability, and character. The award includes a certificate, a year's membership in the institute, and recognition at a dinner honoring Massachusetts recipients.

ANNE M. BUBNIC AWARD - Jerry Brammer
This award for outstanding achievement in biology is presented to the graduating major with a high average in biology courses taken during the four years and significant research contributions. The cash award endowment was contributed by 1979 alumna Anne (Borowiec) Bubnic, who was a biology major while at the Elms.

MARION KENNEDY SWEENEY AWARD - Annie Dunnack
This award is presented to a senior in Communication Sciences and Disorders who exemplifies high academic achievement; shows promise as a scholar, clinician, and/or a scientist; and has demonstrated potential for productivity and leadership in the profession.

PETER STANTON JAMES MEMORIAL AWARD - Amanda Koch
This award recognizes a senior in the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders who has excelled academically, has an interest in helping individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing reach their potential, and has demonstrated altruism and kindness throughout his/her tenure at Elms College. This award, established by Dr. Kathryn James in memory of her husband, recognizes the importance of the coupling of a solid academic foundation with a humanistic approach to working with individuals with communication disorders.

THE CATHERINE GUIDER AWARD - Olivia Morin
This award recognizes a senior nursing student who has selflessly contributed time and effort to both the Elms College community and the community at large through "gentle, quiet ways." This award, established by Nancy Gilbert in memory of her grandmother, is to recognize the important work of nursing students.

LA SOCIETE' DES 40 HOMMES ET 8 CHEVAUX - Kara Stackpole '12
The Forty and Eight Honor Society of U. S. Veterans is committed to charitable and patriotic aims. Since 1955, Forty and Eight has adopted a program to provide financial assistance for nursing education across the country. The Forty and Eight of Chicopee, Massachusetts, established this award to recognize a sophomore or junior nursing student who is a veteran, child of a veteran, or active military; has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher; and who has demonstrated active student leadership or community service.

THE SHEA AWARD IN NURSING - Carolyn Roncaioli
This award is presented to a senior who practices a consistently high level of theoretically-based professional nursing. The award requires a minimum cumulative average of 3.0. The award was established by Mr. Patrick Shea to honor the nursing profession.

HERITAGE HALL GERONTOLOGY AWARD - Jennifer Killion
This award is presented to a nursing student who has completed a clinical experience at Heritage Hall Rehabilitation Campus in Agawam, Massachusetts, and has demonstrated or shown promise in providing care to older adults in a long term care, sub-acute medical or rehabilitation, or assisted living setting. The award is based on the student's statement describing his/her interest, clinical experience, or intention to pursue career goals that include the care of elders; and a recommendation by the nursing faculty member.

MONSIGNOR JOHN HARRINGTON AWARD - Bryan Duarte
This award is given to an outstanding graduate majoring in education. The recipient exemplifies those ideals that characterize Monsignor Harrington: devotion to service and to high academic standards in education.

SHEILA TULLY MEMORIAL AWARD - Jessica Nehmer
This award is in memory of Sheila Tully, an alumna and Early Childhood teacher. It is presented to a student who has distinguished himself/herself in Early Childhood Education. This award is the result of a generous outpouring of gifts from alumnae, friends, and fellow-educators in Ms. Tully's name.

MARIE McKENNA DAVEY AWARD - Mary Lee Gillmeister
This endowment has been established in honor of Marie McKenna Davey, an alumna from the Class of 1944. It is presented to a woman who has distinguished herself in the sciences and teacher education fields. The award has been created through the generosity of the Davey family.

SISTER MARY FENTON AWARD - Meghan Donnelly
This award honors excellence in the humanities and commitment to the values implicit in their study. This award was established to honor Sister Mary Fenton, s.s.j., faculty member and academic dean at Elms College for many years.

SISTER MARGUERITE PELLETIER AWARD - Meghan Donnelly
This award is given to the most outstanding senior with concentration in French and/or Spanish, who has demonstrated skill in language and who has given generous service advancing the appreciation of language. This award honors the memory of Sister Marguerite Pelletier, s.s.j., who distinguished herself for her excellence in language and her capacity to teach it.

THE DOROTHY FITZGIBBON AWARD - Meghan Donnelly
This award is presented annually to an English major in recognition of outstanding writing of prose or poetry. The award signifies the high priority that the College gives to writing excellence.

Meghan Donnelly was also inducted into DELTA EPSILON SIGMA, a national scholastic honor society for students, faculty, and graduate students of colleges and universities with Catholic traditions who have shown outstanding academic accomplishment and dedication to intellectual activity; KAPPA GAMMA PI, a national Catholic college society that honors graduates who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, service achievement, and leadership ability as undergraduates and who further pledge themselves to continue leadership and service activities in the future; and Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, a national honor society that has, since 1934, furthered the aims of higher education by recognizing on a national level individual excellence in academics and campus leadership.

 

 


MARIE E. BUTLER AWARD IN HISTORY - Daniella Zarlengo
This award honors progress and excellence in the study of history. It was established in memory of Marie E. Butler, a close friend of a late member of the Elms College History Department.

HAROLD GRINSPOON ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT AWARD - Linnea Guidi, Gianna Gula, David Peters
Each year, the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation (HGCF) Entrepreneurship Initiative provides monetary awards to students who demonstrate the "entrepreneurial spirit" and who have a strong desire to own their own businesses. These students demonstrate vision, drive, and a clear sense of the work they want to do in a well-defined business plan.

EILEEN ROSENBERG AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PARALEGAL STUDIES - Karen Brault
This award is given annually to the outstanding paralegal graduate. To qualify for this award, the student must have shown excellence in academic work, possess keen analytical abilities, and be dedicated to justice and work in the law. This award was established by the Elms Paralegal Institute Advisory Board to honor Dr. Eileen P. Rosenberg for her leadership and dedication to the Elms College Paralegal Program.

HARTY/JOLICOEUR AWARD - Brendan Cordeiro
This award is presented annually to a Business Management student who has demonstrated a commitment to academic achievement and the college community. This award is designed to assist the student to continue his/her studies at Elms College.

THE WILLIAM DONOVAN ACCOUNTING ALUMNI AWARD - Nicholas Cordeiro
This award was created to honor William Donovan, Accounting Professor, for his outstanding dedication to his students and his commitment to understanding the economic, cultural, social, and business attributes of globalization. The award's intention is to honor a full-time junior accounting major who exhibits not only exceptional academic excellence, but true leadership both inside and outside the classroom. To be considered for this award, nominees must submit a personal essay, have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and show evidence of leadership.

REVEREND MARK STELZER SCHOLARSHIP - Linda Kelly
This award is presented to a student enrolled in the Master of Arts in Applied Theology Program who has demonstrated the ability to integrate the study of sacred theology with the demands of pastoral ministry. This award honors Fr. Mark Stelzer, Religious Studies faculty member, past interim president of Elms College, founder of the Institute for Theology and Pastoral Studies, and beloved and skilled classroom teacher, for his contribution to the study of theology at Elms College.

MONSIGNOR O'NEILL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES - Richard Johnson
This award recognizes the priority of religious studies and its importance in giving meaning to academic endeavor. It is granted to a student who has achieved high academic standing in religious studies classes and who has contributed significantly to Church and community. The award honors the memory of Monsignor Jeremiah O'Neill, a priest distinguished for his deep concern for promoting excellence in theological studies as manifested in his own search for truth.

SISTER ANITA MARIA STATZ AWARD - Karalee Desrosiers
This award is given to a graduating major in Business Management. Criteria for selection are best exemplified by Sister Anita, herself: highly competent professionalism, coupled with and enhanced by a true love and enjoyment of others.

THE FRANCES AND ROY BARR BUSINESS LEADERSHIP AWARD - Lindsay Koladicz
This award is presented annually to a Business Management student who has demonstrated a commitment to academic achievement and the college community. This award is designed to assist the student to continue his/her studies at Elms College.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
As part of a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant, a sum of money is awarded annually to students majoring in the humanities, based on scholastic merit.

KAPPA GAMMA PI
A national Catholic college society that honors graduates who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, service achievement, and leadership ability as undergraduates and who further pledge themselves to continue leadership and service activities in the future. Members of the society are eligible to apply for the National Kappa Gamma Pi Cornaro Scholarship for graduate study, awarded annually in April.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to work with my mentors in the microbiology lab. Thanks to their guidance and support, my work was awarded a Letter of Excellence at the 2009 Eastern Colleges Science Conference.
