First Year Seminar at Elms College

When you start college, everything is new and different. Right from the first day, First Year Seminar helps you meet other students, connect with a faculty member who can help you adjust, and find your way.

In our first-year seminars, we work with you to help you start on the path to discovery. Your instructor becomes your guide and mentor. Together, you explore a topic and search for questions and resolutions. Your instructor encourages you to become an active member of the Elms College community and advises you as you develop your academic program to cultivate a lively atmosphere that encourages diverse perspectives and the free exchange of ideas.

This year's theme is Leadership: Exploring Our Rights and Responsibilities.  This is an excllent opportunity to develop your leadership skills  and to make a difference on our campus, in the community and in our world!

Take a look at the pages below to learn about this year's seminar topics, common readings, special seminar events and the professors who will help you through your first year.

First Year Seminar Course Descriptions

First year seminar courses are connected by a theme each year. This year's theme is Leadership: Exploring Our Rights and Responsibilities. Read through the descriptions of the seminar sections offered this year to see how different instructors will explore the subject while preparing you for life as a college student.

First Year Seminar Shared Summer Reading

All First Year Students are required to read the book during the summer. You will discuss it in your First Year Seminar classes and even our special guest speakers will read it also. This year's reading is titled "Me to We: Finding Meaning in a Material World."
