IRB Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What forms do I need and where can I find them?

If your study involves human subjects, you will need to fill out the IRB review form. It can be found on the Elms College website under Academics

What do I need to include in my IRB proposal?

You will need to describe your study, specifically stating what role the participants will take in study. You will also need to consider any possible risks and what steps will be taken to minimize these risks. Documentation of consent forms will be needed.

Is my study exempt or expeditied?

Exempt studies include studies that involve no risks to participants (no deception, anonymous, no physical, psychological or emotional risks).

Expedited studies need more extensive review from the committee. These studies might involve minor deception (cover story), mildly risky activities (e.g. light exercise) or vulnerable populations (e.g., minors, disabled), or confidential studies where personal information may be obtained and tied back to the participant.

Do I need participants to sign a consent form?

Participants need to sign a consent form if:
1. There is a significant risk that they need to agree to continue or
2. If the participant is a minor or is not able to make decisions, a signature will be needed from an adult guardian/parent.
