Minimum Language Requirements

All students must demonstrate a novice high level of proficiency in a language other than English. This requirement can be met in any of the following ways:
  • Taking the language placement test administered at the college. If you place at a level 3 (novice high) in the language proficiency test, you will have satisfied the language requirement of Elms College. If you place at level 2, you will need to take the second semester only of the first year in that language. If you place at level 1, you need to take a full year of a language.
  • Sign Language I and II (both must be completed) will also satisfy the language requirement.
  • Native speakers of another language will satisfy the requirement with courses in English as a Second Language. Students choosing this option must consult with Dr. Joyce Hampton, ESL Coordinator.
  • Students with two or more years of study of a foreign language (Spanish, for example) cannot take the first year course of that language without having taken the placement test.
  • Heritage students (students raised and schooled in the USA but whose parents are of another world culture and language) may prove proficiency in that language through testing at the college or at another academic institution.
  • A satisfactory score on:
    • The second level C.L.E.P. exam
    • The A.P. exam and/or
    • The C.E.E.B. language achievement test will also satisfy the language requirement of Elms College.

*The test will be administered on orientation days and during the first week of each semester.
