Protect Yourself and Your Personal Property

In your dorm room

  • Always lock your room door and never loan out your key or ELMS ID to anyone.
  • Always report a lost or stolen key to Residence Life.
  • Never admit a stranger into your room or the residence hall.
  • Report all suspicious persons or activity to campus safety.

Walking around

  • Avoid walking alone, if possible.
  • At night, travel on well-lighted and well-traveled streets. Avoid unlighted areas. Walk in the middle of the sidewalk, and never loiter in deserted areas.
  • Be aware of your environment, keep your hands free, and have your keys ready.

In your car

  • Keep windows up and doors locked.
  • Park in well-lighted areas, and avoid deserted streets.
  • Be aware of what is around your car as you walk up to it.
  • Never pick up hitchhikers.
  • Call for help on your cell phone, and wait in the car with the doors locked and the flashers on until a police officer arrives

On a date

  • Remove yourself from situations you don't feel good about.
  • Stay with a group of people, and avoid risky places.
  • Never take drinks from other people, and don't leave your drink unattended.
  • Tell someone you trust your date's name, destination, and planned time of return.
