The Diversity, Equity and Inclusive Community Council

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Community Council (DEICC) is a new council established in the spring of 2009. This council embraces and endorses the state and federal laws and policies that have been adopted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but desires to go beyond adherence to the letter of the law and adopt a set of standards that express the spirit of equality, acceptance, and social justice. The DEICC desires to create and sustain an environment where all students, faculty, and staff are respected and supported.

The DEICC will engage in the following:

• Assess the campus climate relative to DEICC issues to determine appropriate actions and interventions as necessary, at a personal, institutional, and cultural level.
• Establish educational opportunities and support to foster civil discourse and social justice.
• Facilitate campus-wide reflection and dialogue on the topics of class, race and ethnicity, GLBT, and other identities.
• Membership shall participate in education and training related to these topics and become conversant in the subject area.
• Provide the president and appropriate members of our campus community with recommendations for policy, actions, and activities relative to DEICC.

This council consists of eight appointed representative members of the faculty, staff, and students, and includes protected group representation. The director of the Office of Intercultural Programming is the standing chair of this council, and reports directly to the president.
