ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The imagery in my work originates in a visceral reaction to forms in the visual world. The "Seawall Series" began when I first encountered these ruined structures of iron, concrete, rock, and rebar, built to keep the water from the land. As I began to draw onsite, I found myself increasingly compelled by the eroded or cataclysmically broken walls, fascinated by their insistent power and beauty, in spite of the precarious nature of their existence.

In the paintings, using large-scale seawall images, with their surroundings of certain skies and ocean activity as well as particular combinations of colors, it is my intention to provoke a sense of the perpetual interaction and struggle between human will and the forces of nature. As a dedicated singer of large choral works and a lover of opera, I am drawn to dramas that convey inevitability and pathos in forms that attempt to provide beauty to the observer.

I invite viewers to engage with the paintings and drawings on their own terms and, if they are so inclined, to find within them their own interpretations of the imagery.
