MATTHEW J. KILCOYNE is the Managing Partner of R. H. Perry & Associates. Based in New York City, Matt has led, or been a team member, on over 200 presidential and senior administrative higher education search assignments. He focuses on all aspects of the search process, including needs analysis and the pre-search study; marketing, candidate identification and recruitment; evaluation and screening; candidate due diligence; and selection and transition.
Matt has been a member of the search team for approximately 100 presidential assignments, including nearly all of the firm’s searches for Catholic institutions since 2005. He has also successfully completed over 100 senior administrative assignments for institutions as well as associations and non-profit organizations.
A product of Catholic education, Matt retains a strong commitment to its mission and values, particularly educational opportunities for socio-economically disadvantaged youth in the Washington, DC and New York City metropolitan areas. He has worked closely with the Washington Jesuit Academy since its inception as both a volunteer and the first chairperson of its major fundraising committee. He has also assisted such educational organizations as the Higher Achievement Project (HAP), the Church of Saint Francis Xavier Mission, and the Sursum Corda Cooperative. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Theatre Delta, which uses Interactive Theater to promote dialogue and social change in communities globally.
A fourth-generation native Washingtonian, Matt received his B.A. from Georgetown University.
ROGER H. MARTIN, Ph.D., Senior Consultant, brings over 40 years of experience in higher education administration to our presidential search practice. Roger has teamed with Matt Kilcoyne in successfully completing eight presidential search assignments since 2013, including six for Catholic colleges and universities.
For 20 years Dr. Martin served as president of two liberal arts colleges, Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia and Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. From 1980 to 1986, Rusty was the associate dean at Harvard University’s Divinity School; Executive Assistant to the President and Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees at Middlebury College; and in development positions at New York University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Since retiring as a college president in 2007, Roger has consulted for higher education institutions focused on fundraising (his specialty), strategic planning, and board governance at institutions including Metropolitan College of New York, The College of the Bahamas, Morningside College in Iowa, Suffolk University in Boston and Bergen County Community College in New Jersey. His book Racing Odysseus: A College President Becomes a Freshman Again (University of California Press: 2008) about the sabbatical he took as a “freshman” at St. John’s College, in Annapolis, Maryland, has made him a featured speaker at college and university events across the country. These include engagements at Albright College, Southern Vermont College, Virginia State University, South Western Adventist University in Texas, and Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Roger has recently completed a second book entitled Off to College: A Guide for Parents, which was published by the University of Chicago Press last August. He has also authored a number of articles on higher education leadership.
Dr. Martin is a well-known British historian who has published extensively in the field of 18th and 19th century British church history; Roger spent a year at the University of Edinburgh studying Scottish church history; and he currently serves as a trustee of the British Schools and Universities Foundation in Manhattan. He also served for three years on the President’s Commission of the NCAA.
Dr. Martin holds a Bachelor of Arts from Drew University, a Bachelor of Divinity from Yale University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford University. Roger also holds honorary doctorates from Drew, Lehigh University, Moravian College, Randolph-Macon College and Morningside College in Iowa.
