Campus Ministry and Community
Service
The Office of Campus Ministry and Community Service seeks
to build community at Elms College through hospitality and
structured
opportunities
such as:
- Sacramental and liturgical celebrations
- Retreats
- Inter-religious gatherings
- Opportunities for service and reflection
- Study of and responses to social justice
issues, such as homelessness, hunger, domestic violence,
war and peace, and racism.
The focus is on the development of student leadership so
that learning is extended outside the classroom. Sister Maureen
Kervick, the director, and campus ministry staff and volunteers
seek to ground students in a sense of belonging, build their
skills of compassionate response and critical thinking, and
provide a foundation for leadership in their lives, faith,
and traditions.
The Office of Campus Ministry and Community Service also coordinates
the college’s 30-hour service learning
requirement for students, which is an integral part of the Elms College
educational
tradition and core curriculum.
This office assists students in locating appropriate settings in which
to complete their volunteer requirements, such as:
- Habitat for Humanity
- Soup kitchens
- Homeless shelters
- Literacy programs
- Crop walks
The director and pastoral staff are also available
to assist members of the Elms College community
in areas of personal concern.
Located on the first floor of the College Center,
the Campus Ministry Office provides a central space
for planning relevant events and programs with
the input
of students, faculty, administration, and staff.
