Elms College
Social Justice and the Liberal Arts 2007
Solidarity. Rights and Responsibilities.
One Human Family is a year-long examination of the key Catholic social teaching theme of rights and responsibilities as it relates to the war in Iraq.
Through this series, it is our hope to widen the circle of public discourse and provoke deeper reflection on what we consider to be one of the key moral issues of our day.
The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.
Raising questions that promote public discourse is what the liberal arts at Elms College are all about. We engage students and the public in the issues that affect our broader community and the world with a focus on community service and on the college’s commitment to social justice.
