Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (C.A.G.S.) in Communication Sciences and Disorders (C.S.D.)

The certificate of advanced graduate study (C.A.G.S.) program in communication sciences and disorders (C.S.D.) is a minimum 30-credit post-master's course of study leading to the C.A.G.S. It is appropriate for individuals holding a master's degree in:

  • speech-language pathology
  • audiology
  • special education
  • educational psychology
  • education of deaf or hard-of-hearing persons

The participant will have the opportunity to determine, in conjunction with the program director, the courses that will comprise the 30-credit individual's program.

  • Each student will select an area of interest/concentration and will complete a minimum of 12 credits in that area.
  • Each student will also complete required core courses (nine credits), for a total of 21 credits.
  • The remaining nine credits may be in any area.
  • A maximum of nine post-master's credits may be transferred from another college/university and applied toward the C.A.G.S.
  • Non-matriculated students may enroll in up to nine credits of coursework before being required to apply for admission to the C.A.G.S. program.
  • Once a student has matriculated, they are allowed 6 years to complete the program.

Students will be permitted to enroll in an unlimited number of C.A.G.S. courses on a non-credit basis.

Courses are offered under a variety of formats. Some courses are offered as traditional semester-long courses. Others may be in a one-to-two credit workshop/seminar format. Utilization of varied formats will allow for maximum flexibility and educational benefit to the practicing clinician that enrolls in the C.A.G.S. in C.S.D. program.

  • Child Disorders

Program Goals
This program has the following goals:

  • To provide speech-language pathologists with an opportunity to further develop their clinical skills and knowledge of the field of communication sciences and disorders.
  • To facilitate the speech-language pathologist's growth in a specific area(s) of interest/concentration.
  • To provide speech-language pathologists with experiences that will enable them to continue developing critical and creative thinking skills and to apply these skills in therapeutic settings.
  • To provide information to speech-language pathologists regarding cultural and linguistic variations in human communication and to develop appropriate assessment tools and therapeutic methodologies for patients/clients who have a broad range of backgrounds.
  • To enable speech-language pathologists to utilize technology in therapeutic settings.
