The M.A.A.T. program is a professional 36 semester-hour graduate deegree program for religious educators, pastoral ministers, and other outreach service personnel. Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)
Since its establishment as a four-year institution in 1928, Elms College has enjoyed an outstanding reputation for preparing teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) degree program, with a strong liberal arts character, is Elms College's response to recent national and local trends in teacher education. Additional education beyond the bachelor's degree is now recommended to produce teachers with a breadth of knowledge and a depth of knowledge in the specific subjects they teach. Candidates in this graduate program have opportunities in the classroom and through extensive fieldwork to translate their liberal arts backgrounds into stimulating teaching practice. The graduate degree is designed to serve national and state priorities along with providing a program to serve the professional development needs of the western Massachusetts region.

Master of Education (M.Ed.), not linked with certification
This M.Ed. program is an enrichment degree designed to promote the professional development of experienced teachers. The degree offers teachers wide flexibility to plan a program to meet their professional needs and goals. The course of study provides the teacher with the option to expand his/her expertise in education and in certain academic fields. Completion of the program requires 33 semester credit hours, including a master's thesis.

The program is composed of the following three parts:

  • a core of courses focusing on thinking skills, multiculturalism, and technology in education;
  • education and liberal arts electives; and,
  • a research-based master's thesis.
