Minor in Biology
Students electing biology as a minor field of concentration must take 24 semester hours chosen from the department course offerings in consultation with a faculty member from the department. The choice of courses will be related to the student's major and subsequent career goal.

We are entering what is widely regarded as the century of biology. The life sciences, undergoing consolidation, are forming two major domains:

  • One extends from the molecule to the organism,
  • the other brings together population biology, biodiversity studies, and ecology.

To best appreciate life in its full complexity, both domains must be investigated. Many of our graduates enter the health care field, either at the pre- or post-professional level.

Liberal Arts Major with a Concentration in Biological Science
Students electing this major are required to take a total of 36 credits: 18 to 24 may be taken in biology, and 12 to 18 in one or more related disciplines. Students with very specific career goals may find that such an interdisciplinary major offers the best preparation. Biology Department advisors are happy to work closely with students in combining biology with another discipline.

Premedicine in Preparation for Medical, Dental, Optometry, Veterinary, Chiropractic, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy or Similar Professional Health Programs
Students can prepare for admission to health professional schools by majoring in any subject, but they must include in their program courses that meet minimum requirements for entrance into the professional school of their choice.

The science requirements are as follows:

  • CHE 121-122, General Chemistry
  • CHE 211-212, Organic Chemistry
  • PHY 105-106, General Physics
  • BIO 123-124, General Biology

Two semesters of college math is required, and it is recommended that calculus (MAT 131-132) is included. Other recommended courses include:

  • BIO 301, Developmental Biology
  • BIO 321, Genetics
  • BIO 326, Molecular Biology
  • CHE 336, Biochemistry
  • BIO 215-216, Anatomy and Physiology

Please Note: Different medical and health professional school programs have specific requirements that need to be satisfied before the student applies to the program. The pre-medicine advisor has information on different program requirements. Students should familiarize themselves with the requirements of the program(s) to which they are applying, and have regular consultations with the pre-medicine advisor to ensure all mandatory requirements are being met.
