Chemistry Teacher Preparation
Currently, there is a significant shortage of qualified high school chemistry teachers in the nation, so preparation of high school chemistry teachers constitutes one very important focus of the Elms College Chemistry Department.

The high school chemistry teacher preparation program has been designed to:

  • develop skills and competencies through courses in chemistry and education
  • teach classroom observing and practice teaching activities
  • provide opportunity to participate in apprenticeship studies of teaching methods under the tutelage of a chemistry faculty member

The department requires that both undergraduate and graduate chemistry/education majors attend a workshop in laboratory safety practices and a workshop in hazardous waste management and disposal. A written report on each workshop should be submitted to the Chemistry Department chairperson.

Undergraduate students who wish to pursue a career in teaching high school chemistry should seek a double major in chemistry and secondary education.
