Walter Breau:
chair, Division of Natural Sciences, Mathematics &
Technology, associate professor of biology
Dr. Breau is an expert in microbiology, so he can teach
you about ebola virus, or recombinent DNA research, or
bioterrorism. But his interest in science doesn't end
in the classroom. At home, he's passionate about hot chili
peppers: he breeds them, and has grown up to 50 different
varieties. "The genetics and chemistry of chili peppers
is fascinating," he said. "I enjoy studying
the genetic make-up of the different varieties, and the
chemicals they contain that make them taste hot."
Not only that, we hear he makes a pretty mean salsa.
Maria Cristina Canales:
chair, Division of Humanities & Fine Arts, associate
professor of foreign languages
Cristina was hired as Assistant Professor of Modern Languages
15 years ago, and is currently the Chair of the Humanities
& Fine Arts Division. She specializes in Caribbean
studies, particularly in the literature of French expression,
and is currently researching Hispanics in the United States.
Cristina is dedicated to affirmative action, and social
justice in race and culture. She co-authored a tri-lingual
oral history of Hermano Pedro, a 17th century Spanish
missionary. Told in the native Guatemalan language Kaqchikel,
or in Spanish, and translated into English, the tales
chronicle the "often miraculous exploits of this
prayerful man, whose qualities of humility and kindness,
backed by an indomitable strength of character in the
face of adversity, define every situation he encounters,"
according to the authors. Cristina attended Hermano Pedro's
recent canonization in Guatemala, and plans to spend the
next year designing courses, presentations, and exhibits
about the event. Christine
Fay: Since 1992 Christine has taught business management
at Elms College. She combines a background in social service
with management of nonprofit organizations. Professor
Fay brings an interdisciplinary approach to the study
of management, focusing students on the complexities of
managing a firm in the midst of increasing diversity,
regulation, and change. Christine manages the internship
program on campus, and is aggressive in finding companies
to place Elms College interns to prepare them for careers
within the business community. As part of her doctoral
program, she has conducted research on many aspects of
the employment relationship and institutional change,
including her current investigation into employee performance
management systems. Scott
Hartblay: Over the past 15 years Scott has developed
an interest in international social work, teaching in
Ireland and Poland, and presenting scholarly works at
international social work conferences. His specialties
are group work, the development of values and ethics in
social work students, and the use of literature and art
in the teaching of social work practice. Scott regularly
leads students on educational trips to Ireland and Poland. |
