Superb teachers master the subject matter they teach, understand the developmental stages of their students, are skillful classroom managers, and are expert at using many different education techniques. Our graduate programs hone these skills and build upon your experience by exploring such teaching methods as discovery learning, concept attainment, modeling, case studies, and role playing.

Our courses in child and adolescent development help our teacher candidates understand the physical, social, and emotional stages typical for the age group they will teach. Regular exposure to information about atypical development in these areas prepares you to meet the needs of all of your students.

Initial teaching licenses earned at Elms College qualify candidates to begin teaching in Massachusetts and more than 40 states, islands, and territories, including all of New England and New York.

Our alumni have successful and fulfilling teaching careers, and often earn awards for excellence in teaching. Many go on to become school principals or administrators.

Master of Education and Master of Arts in Teaching Programs

Our master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) and the master of education (M.Ed.) programs are built upon two premises. First, outstanding teachers have a strong liberal arts educational foundation, which integrates the ability to think critically and creatively with a deep and broad understanding of subject matter. Secondly, skillful teachers move comfortably between theory and practice, translating what they have learned into effective curriculum and instruction.

The M.A.T. program is designed for students with four years of liberal arts or sciences education. Upon completion of the program, you will receive a master's degree and an Initial Massachusetts state license as an educator. The licensure is reciprocal with those of more than 40 states, islands, and territories.

The M.Ed. not linked with licensure is an enrichment degree designed to promote the professional development of experienced teachers and school/community leaders. It does not lead to teacher licensing.
