Summer Reading Program

Elms College is pleased to announce its twenty-seventh annual summer reading program designed to serve children who are having reading difficulties. Staffed by experienced teachers who are finishing licensure requirements as Reading Specialists within the Master of Arts in Teaching program, plus members of the college faculty, the five-week program will operate daily from June 27 through July 29, 2016 (no session on Monday, July 4). Children will attend from 9:30 a.m. until noon and work in small groups.

During the program, each child's needs will be carefully assessed so that a program of individualized learning activities can be planned. At the conclusion of the program, a written report will describe the student's strengths and weaknesses and provide recommendations to parents and future teachers.

MCAS Preparation

Third Grade and Above

Once again, an MCAS preparation component is included for students who will be in third grade or above in the Fall of 2016. Reading and writing tasks that mirror those typically found on the MCAS will be worked with for a portion of each week. The goals of these lessons will be to improve silent reading comprehension of both fiction and nonfiction and to improve expository writing skills. Test-taking skills will also be addressed.

Enrollment will be limited to students who will be entering grades 1-8 in Fall 2016. Those interested should complete the enclosed application form and return it by June 17. Applications will be reviewed by program staff and applicants will be notified by mail of their acceptance no later than June 24, 2016.

Print the enrollment form or contact us for more information.

The tuition for the program is $300 and is payable upon acceptance. Limited scholarship assistance is available for those who qualify.
