Philosophy Department

For centuries, people have searched for answers to their questions regarding the origin and meaning of life, the nature of the world, individual rights and social obligations, ethical ways of behavior, logical thinking, and the existence of God. Philosophy is the field of study that examines these and similar questions through dialogue and thought; the history of these questions; and the answers proposed by many famous philosophers.

Philosophy is one of the central disciplines of the liberal arts, and nearly all other fields have a philosophical foundation. There are philosophies of art, religion, history, and science, to name a few. Whatever your major, philosophy will enrich your experience of it by adding its analytical perspective.

Minor in Philosophy
Elms College offers a minor in philosophy, which can be an excellent complement to any major. Eighteen credits in philosophy, which may be taken at any time during the college years, are required. All philosophy courses qualify for the minor, and they may be taken in any order.
