Chemistry

The mission of the Chemistry Department is:

  • to give the student an understanding of chemical principles
  • to develop skill and accuracy in observation and measurement
  • to provide opportunities to demonstrate skills in problem solving, investigation, and interpretation
  • and to create an environment in which the scope of modern chemistry and its roles in world societies might be realized.

The laboratory is an integral part of most chemistry courses. A concentration in chemistry prepares the student for:

  • a position in the research or non-research commercial laboratory
  • graduate school
  • the teaching of chemistry; or
  • medical, dental, or veterinary schools.

We prepare students for careers in:

  • medical technology
  • the life sciences
  • applied mathematics

The department also cooperates in the program leading to the natural science major, which prepares students for teaching science at elementary and junior high school levels, or for careers requiring a broadly-based scientific background.

Chemistry majors are required to learn introductory computer programming. To fulfill this requirement, a student may take a computer-programming course or satisfactorily demonstrate knowledge in the area of programming languages.

Also, knowledge of French or German is strongly recommended. The department also recommends that chemistry majors take appropriate mathematics courses beyond those listed.
