The director of the library is responsible for overseeing the collection development process and establishing the budget for each academic department. Through library liaisons for each library fund, which roughly correspond to the disciplines in the Elms curriculum, the director delegates authority to the chairperson of each academic department to spend the allotted budget for materials that support its areas of specialization in accordance with the guidelines and objectives contained in the library's collection policies.
The faculty of Elms College is expected to participate in this process by recommending materials that support the curriculum, support research, and keep the collection current. In addition to the suggestion of faculty members, suggestions from Elms administration, staff, and students are encouraged, so that the entire Elms community contributes to the building of the collection.
Every effort will be made to accommodate the requests that are within the scope of the library's overall development policies. Librarian liaisons are responsible for reviewing the library's overall collection and identifying inadequate areas of coverage. The director of the library has final authority on materials purchasing and reserves the right to refuse the purchase of any faculty's recommended material, after consultation with the requestor and his/her department head.
