What is ARCL?

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is the academic division of the American Library Association. It is THE nationwide professional association for academic librarians, as well as other academic library stakeholders. The ACRL is dedicated to enhancing the ability of academic library and information professionals to serve the information needs of the higher education community and to improve learning, teaching, and research. In 1989, ACRL advocated successfully for the faculty status and tenure-track status of academic librarians. ACRL is one of the largest divisions of the American Library Association (ALA), with a current membership of more than 12,000.

ACRL collects annual statistics on academic libraries to produce a fee-based product, ACRL Metrics. ACRL Metrics is online service that allows access to both ACRL and NCES-IES academic library statistics (from 2000 to the present). Recently it has added a select subset of IPEDS data specific to academic libraries.

The data collected from academic libraries is designed to help these libraries do the following:

  • Support strategic planning and advocacy efforts
  • Complement budget presentations and grant applications
  • Enable peer benchmarking
  • Access and assess multi-year trend analysis
