Troubleshooting Remote Access

Information at your fingertips

A Guide for Survival in the Information Jungle

If you are having difficulties accessing the Library's remote databases please answer the following questions:

Are you receiving any of the following messages?

  • "Your library card for 'your library's name' has expired" - you will need to update your library card at the Circulation Desk in the Library.
  • "We are unable to provide access to the databases at this time. The library system is down, please try again later" - the server is down.
  • "We are unable to provide access to the databases at this time. Please see Library staff for help" - contact Circulation Desk to check your patron record.
  • "Your library's name, barcode or last name was incorrect. Please try again." - If you are sure you have typed your information correctly, contact Circulation Desk to double-check your patron record.

Are you looping back to the log-on page or receiving the following message?

  • If so, you need to double-check to see if your browser has been set up to accept "cookies" and Java scripting.
  • This is cookie.htm from the docs subdirectory.
Licensing agreements for these databases require that access be extended only to authorized users. Once you have been validated by this system, a "cookie" is sent to your browser as an ongoing indication of your authorization to access these databases. It will only need to be set once during login. As you access databases, they may also use cookies. Your ability to use those databases may depend on whether or not you allow those cookies to be set.

Which browser are you using to access the Internet?

  • Internet Explorer (3x,4x,5x,6x,7x)
  • Netscape (3x,4x,6x,7x)
  • Compuserve (4x, 2000), AOL (3x, 4x, 5x,6x,7x, 8x, 9x)
  • MSN (7, 8), Mozilla Firefox (1.5x)

NOTE: Each browser is slightly different - see instructions under "Related Links" (on the upper right) for individual browsers.

How to locate the version of the browser?

  • Click "help"
  • Click "about browser"
  • Browser version will show in a popup window

How to add Remote Database website address?

  • If you are running Internet Explorer 6x (alone or with AOL or Compuserve) and can enable cookies and Java scripting, but are still looping back to the logon page, you also need to add the Remote Database website address into the browser options.
  • Directions are located under Internet Explorer 6x

Cannot access the setup, preferences, or tools?

  • You may need to re-download your browser

Cookies and Java scripting not listed?

  • Double check other areas within the software or access the help screens

Still unable to access cookies and Java scripting?

  • You may need to re-download your browser
