    Twenty-two years after completing hairdressing school, Springfield native Sheril Cooley ’13 decided to go back to school. She earned an associate’s degree from Holyoke Community College in 2011 and had been accepted to a nearby four-year college’s social work bachelor’s program. But when a HCC transfer counselor mentioned the then-newly launched HCC/Elms psychology degree completion program, Sheril knew the Saturday schedule and small class sizes would be better for her.

For years, students from Holyoke Catholic High School have enrolled in college courses that give them both high school graduation credits as well as college credits, with only a one block walk up Springfield Street to get to class.  This semester, the Division of Education decided to offer one of its required undergraduate courses, PSY214 Children's Learning and Development to another group of students at Cathedral High School.

    When nursing students Salvatore Dimino ’13 and David Paier ’13 were enrolled in NUR 221 Fundamentals of Nursing as sophomores, their instructor–Associate Professor Janet Moore, Ph.D., R.N., G.C.N.S.–recognized opportunities for improving the way patients’ medications were handled at one of the clinical sites. Working closely with Dr. Moore, Sal and David began developing a quality improvement project for the site during the spring 2011 semester.
