Lifting Up Our Spirits

Patrick Carpenter '02 and Michael Smith '03 are putting their collective muscle to the test through charitable activity to support the victims of Newtown.

Many alumni know Patrick as president of the Alumni Association and the director of annual giving. What most people don't know, is that Patrick, along with friend, alumnus, and Alumnae Library Interim Head of Reference Mike Smith, are members of a powerlifting team based out of New Hartford, Connecticut.

When Patrick and Mike discussed ways to help the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, they consulted their powerlifting coach Jay Knobler. Jay grew up in Newtown and still has family in the area.

Patrick, Mike, and Jay decided to use their resources and connections to host a charity bench press event at their gym, Iron Horse Strength and Fitness, on December 30.

All proceeds will benefit the Caroline's Gift fund, through Newtown Youth and Family Services. The event is expected to attract athletes from all over New England, some of whom are considered the best "benchers" in the world. Details can be found on the event's Facebook page.

As president of the Alumni Association, Patrick is proud to show his Elms spirit of community and compassion. If any of our alumni are also involved in other charity events to support victims of the tragedy in Newtown, we invite you to share your story with us.
