Student Wins Bishop Maguire Award

Sara Edwards is this year’s recipient of the Bishop Joseph F. Maguire Award. The award is given annually to a religious studies major or a student who has made outstanding contributions to the community and lives out their faith through community service projects, sacramental programs, liturgical celebrations, retreats, and prayer.

“In all areas, like Bishop Maguire, Sara lives out her faith. She believes in the innate goodness of all people, and goes through life with a sense of ‘seeing God in all things,’” said Carol Allan, SSJ, director of campus ministry.

A senior from Farmington, Connecticut, Sara is an elementary education and history double major, with a minor in fine arts. She is a student ambassador and serves on student activities, Active Minds Club, Residence Hall Council, Respect Alliance Club, and is president of Campus Ministry Club.

Sara is also a participant and student leader in the Dorothy Day program and has volunteered in several service projects. Sara said she was both shocked and honored to win the award.

“It’s humbling to me that I was chosen out of all the people on campus who do so much,” Sara said.

Sara hopes to be an elementary teacher when she graduates. She said her commitment to service comes from both the Catholic social justice values of Elms College as well as her aspiring career.

“Part of wanting to be a teacher shows that you want to serve the community and leave it better than you found it,” she said.

The Western Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association established the Bishop Joseph F. Maguire Award in honor of Bishop Maguire in recognition of his outstanding service as the association’s chaplain for 20 years. Bishop Maguire is Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Springfield and an avid supporter of athletics at Elms College, as well as the namesake for its athletic facility, the Maguire Center.
