Life Support
R.N. to B.S.

" For most of us when we're sick, life support is not high tech equipment like heart monitors, ventilators, or dialysis machines. The real source of life support is the two million nurses who staff America's health care institutions."
--Claire Fagin, Ph.D., R.N

Why return for a B.S. in Nursing?
All nurses share a common spirit and vision: they apply a broad array of technological knowledge about health and healing within caring environments. Many registered nurses find themselves wanting to return to school to get a bachelor's degree, to stay current with their careers, to move into management, or to go to graduate school.

The R.N. to B.S. in nursing program at Elms College offers nurses a solid liberal arts education while enhancing prior knowledge and experience in nursing. And it does this in a convenient setting with maximum flexibility and personal attention.

Founded in 1978, the nursing program at Elms College brings its students on an educational journey aimed at developing each of them personally, intellectually, and professionally. Nursing here is taught in an environment characterized by an ethical value system, a spirit of ecumenism, and a common vision of the importance of a commitment to service of others.

Why Elms College?
The special R.N. to B.S. program at Elms College is designed specifically to accommodate working registered nurses who want to complete a bachelor of science degree in a vibrant learning community. Why Elms College? Here are just a few of the many reasons to consider:

  • Recognizing the current challenges in the healthcare field, Elms College honors its mission of service to the community by offering a 50 percent reduction in tuition for students accepted into the program. This will be reevaluated for each entering class.
  • The entire program may be completed in two years, taking two courses in five terms.
  • You will be part of a small group of no more than 25 to 30 students, who will move through the entire program together.
  • All classes are scheduled on Mondays from 3:30 to 9:00 p.m., allowing you to plan your work schedule in advance for the entire two years.

In addition, our students:

  • Do not have to take the National League of Nursing entrance exam, saving them $500
  • Find our campus accessible, safe, and with plenty of nearby parking
  • Have flexibility in choosing a field placement

An example of a full two-year schedule for the program is:

Faculty
One of our greatest strengths is that each student has close interactions with the faculty and an advisor on the nursing faculty who guides her or him through the program. And, this is a faculty that really cares! Not only are they highly qualified clinically and academically, they are experts in their fields. And they care about each and every one of the students in the program - about helping them develop and improve their nursing skills, critical thinking ability, ethical decision-making processes, and a comprehensive grasp of current medical technology used by nurses.

PACU, Shriners' Hospital for Children

Hometown: Springfield, MA
Year of graduation: 2000

"It had been a lifelong dream to earn a bachelor's degree. I became an LPN and then returned for an associates degree to become an R.N. But I never felt complete, and I could only go so far in my nursing career. I examined several R.N. to B.S. programs. For me, there was no choice but Elms College.
When I graduated from Elms College, I had become much more than a better nurse; I had become a more well-rounded person with a broader perspective of the world. With these credentials, I feel more respected; I feel good about me."
