Language Testing

As part of the liberal arts curriculum, students must complete core requirements in a variety of areas including religion, ethics, culture, civics, and critical thinking/communication. One of these requirements is foreign language. All students must demonstrate a novice high level of proficiency in a language other than their native language. This requirement can be met in several ways.

Take the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam

This exam is offered by Elms College throughout the summer. To meet the foreign language requirement, students must place at novice high or above.

Note: Students who have completed two or more years of a foreign language in high school must take the foreign language proficiency exam.

Other ways to meet the requirement:

  1. Completing both novice I and II level courses of the same language at Elms College.
  2. Completing English as a Second Language courses as part of the ESL program at Elms College. This option must be approved by Dr. Joyce Hampton.
  3. Submitting a satisfactory score on one of the following exams:
    • CLEP Exam (second level)
    • AP Exam
    • CEEB Language Achievement Test
    • Seal of Biliteracy Program
