I have been a certified medical assistant for 25 years, working in the lab, cardiology, emergency room, employee health, and pediatrics. In my current role as a care coordinator, I had the opportunity to attend community health worker classes at Holyoke Community College.
This position, and the training I received at HCC, sparked my interest in continuing my education. However, I did not know what my next step would be. After speaking with my advisor, she told me about the Elms/STCC social work program.
I did not know there was such a program, at first, I was unsure if I would qualify. I contacted Wally Soufane, and after speaking with him, I was encouraged and excited about this program. Another benefit of this program was the short time it would take to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
I sacrificed my Saturdays for the last two years, and it was well worth it. I had professors who challenged me and gave me their insight into the social work field.
I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity to attend the Elms/STCC BSW program. My earlier experiences and the knowledge I gained during this program will help me toward my future goal of becoming a medical social worker. The foundation started at Elms College will guide me as I continue my studies in the master of social work program in the Fall.
