Why Elms for your Irish Studies minor?

  • Gain introductory proficiency in speaking Gaelic.
  • Develop an awareness of and appreciation for other cultures.
  • Study abroad in Ireland and broaden your worldview.

Immerse Yourself in Irish Language and Culture

The interdisciplinary Irish studies minor explores many facets of Ireland in a way that complements our other majors. Students studying education, business, history, English literature, and other disciplines will find productive intersections between their classes. If you’re interested in studying abroad or pursuing a career that involves travel, learning about a culture different than your own will help you become a true global citizen.

Learn Beyond the Classroom

In addition to your coursework, you will benefit from a close relationship with the Irish Cultural Center of Western New England (ICC). Since 1999, the ICC and Elms College have brought prominent Irish scholars, politicians, and cultural figures to campus, such as Nobel Laureate Betty Williams, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, and arms decommissioning monitors Rev. Alec Reid and Rev. Harold Good. Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants also regularly hold positions on campus, and work closely with students on learning to speak introductory Gaelic.

Apply Your Skills Abroad

Our students have the opportunity to study in Ireland at such schools as the Innisfree College and Convention Center at St. Angela’s College in Sligo, and at Diseart in Dingle, County Kerry. Students can also work with faculty to arrange alternative study abroad experiences at other Irish colleges.
