Elms College Computer Science major Chloe Gerhardson, alongside Professor Nina Theis, Ph.D., attended the NSF S-STEM Conference in Chicago from November 8-10.
Chloe, a recipient of the prestigious S-STEM Scholarship at Elms College, was invited to this national event, which gathers S-STEM Scholars and Principal Investigators from across the country.
This conference allowed Chloe and other scholars to present their work, gaining insights from peers across a range of STEM disciplines. Chloe reflected on her time at the S-STEM Scholars and PI Meeting, “The conference not only provided me with an opportunity to engage with and learn from other STEM scholars around the nation, but it reminded me that my efforts, skill, and persistence are directly tied to my success in my field”.

All attendees also engaged in professional and career development, Chloe said, “Imposter syndrome can sneak up on all of us, and it can sometimes leave me questioning myself like “how did I even get here?” but this gathering, which celebrated our determination, reminded me that I didn’t just stumble into my achievements. I’ve worked incredibly hard and earned my place.”
Professor Nina Theis, Ph.D. reflected on this program, saying, “It was incredible to see all of the wraparounds that this grant is giving to our students. It is not just the scholarship money but also the whole STEM community coming together from all over the country to provide mentorship, internship opportunities and jobs. There were even photographers there to take headshots!”.
Congratulations on all of your hard work, Chloe!
