Doctorate of Nursing Practice. On track to graduate in May 2024.

Bailey was diagnosed with cancer in high school and then endured surgery and a lengthy recovery. After 4 years of remission, she was able to go to college and complete her bachelor’s degree in psychology and communications.  But then the cancer returned, resulting in an additional surgery and another lengthy recovery.

It was during this time that Bailey started thinking of her future. Remembering her experience with cancer, and the pain, fear, and uncertainty that went with it, she thought of all the nurses who tended to her and helped restore her body and spirit. That was when she decided to go back to school to become a nurse.

“I felt like healthcare is where I just really could make a difference.”

Bailey is on track to graduate from Elms College in May with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.

One of the most significant moments in Bailey’s life took place in high school when she was diagnosed with cancer. A portion of one of her lungs had to be removed, and she underwent lengthy cancer treatment.

After four years of remission, during which time completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology and communications at the University of Massachusetts, Bailey learned cancer had returned, this time it had metastasized into her liver. Another surgery and another round of treatment followed.

Her health issues and recovery naturally led her to reassess what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. Thinking of her own experiences and the care and compassion shown to her by the nurses who treated her, Bailey decided she wanted to explore nursing.

“It just made me really appreciate the nurses who took care of me. I had some really close relationships with some of them. It really brought me to nursing,” she said. “I felt like healthcare is where I just really where I could make a difference and I think my personal story can really help me connect with people.”

She returned to school, earning her LPN and RN degrees, and has spent much of the last decade working as a nurse. Her passion for the profession, and the desire to learn as much as she could led her to Elms College. She enrolled in the doctor of nursing practice degree at Elms College and is on track to graduate in May 2024.

A DNP is the highest level of education in nursing, Nurses with a DNP are considered to have the highest level of expertise in the profession and take a leadership role in patient care, clinical training for other nurses, and in administrative policy and management.

“My experience has really made me want to just get more out of nursing, out of the profession, and that’s what brought me to Elms,” she said.  Elms seemed like a kind of perfect fit. It’s not too bad of a commute and you can do a lot of things remotely.”

She said Elms was exactly what she was looking for when considering where she wanted to enroll for her DNP.

“Our classes are small. It’s a really tight-knit group. The faculty has been great,” she said. “

“I’ve met some people, and I’ve had great relationships that are ongoing just because of this program.”
