I chose to attend Elms for Psychology because the field has always fascinated me. Although I don’t intend to pursue a career in psychology directly, I believe that psychology can provide useful tools and knowledge for any profession. Additionally, I am a mother of a child who has struggled with mood disorders, behavioral issues, and other mental health problems. Advocating for a child in the school system that requires more support and adaptive learning techniques can be a full-time job in itself.

I am grateful that Elms offers its Psychology degree in an online format. As an adult learner who is also a
full-time working mother of two, attending classes in person is simply not a possibility. Through the program at Elms, I have been able to complete courses on my schedule when and where it is convenient for me. Sometimes, I even watch course materials like YouTube videos or Ted Talks with my children so that I can study and spend time with them.

Elms has made the online setting interactive too, with discussion boards and peer review of student
projects. You will start to see familiar names in your classes each term, and through the getting-to-know-you posts, you start to feel like you know your classmates.

My coursework has given me a framework to better understand what my son goes through on a day-to-day basis, which has allowed me to be more patient and understanding with him. It has even given me insights into how as a society thoughts, feelings, and perceptions can vary between groups so widely. It has also helped me to improve my language and assert myself as an advocate for my child and his
needs. I am forever grateful for the opportunities that this program has given me.
