Western Mass Literacy Collaborative (WMLC)

The central project of the WMLC is the Summer Learn & Earn Literacy Corps (SL&E). Through the SL&E, college students receive training to implement culturally and linguistically sustaining practices and evidence-based pedagogies that support the literacy learning of young and adolescent students. The college students are affectionately known as: “LITs” – Literacy Intervention Teachers. The SL&E provides a quality mentored and authentic work experience for our LITs that benefits the children that they teach who attend summer sessions at schools, community groups, and early education sites in the Western Massachusetts area.

The school districts, community groups, early elementary centers, and the higher education partners strive to meet our shared goals for the WMLC. We support the critical need to improve literacy outcomes for all children through evidenced-based structured literacy learning with culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies. And we support attracting, preparing, and growing a diversified population of highly qualified educators who address literacy outcomes for youth in our region.
