When Cameron Pearson graduated from college, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. While researching post-baccalaureate programs, he discovered Elms College and was immediately drawn to its small, supportive environment.

“I went online, looked up a lot of the bigger programs in the northeast, but I came across Elms and thought it seemed like a really cool program,” Cameron said. “What really drew me in was that it’s a smaller college where you get to know everybody. It felt welcoming and like the right place for me.”

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Cameron enrolled in Elms College’s Pre-Medical Postbaccalaureate Certificate program, where he quickly immersed himself in campus life. He worked in a biology research lab, tutored students, taught undergraduate classes, and served as a graduate assistant in the library.

“Those experiences allowed me to develop skills that would be helpful down the road and connect with a lot of influential people on campus,” he said.

After his first semester, Cameron transitioned into Elms’ Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences program. Throughout his time at Elms, he credits Dr. Janet Williams for helping students navigate the complex medical school application process.

“Dr. Williams did a fantastic job ensuring we were prepared,” Cameron said. “She helped with everything from personal statements and letters of recommendation to bringing in former students to share their experiences.”

Inspired by a desire to help others and make a meaningful impact on people’s lives, Cameron pursued medical school after completing his degree. He gained valuable clinical experience as an anesthesia technician at Baystate Medical Center before receiving multiple medical school acceptances.

“After about a year and a half of working as an anesthesia technician, I received three acceptances, and I chose Meharry Medical College. I decided to come here for a multitude of reasons, but I think again the small college feel was very important to me, just like Elms”, he said.

Today, Cameron is entering his second year at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, while conducting summer research at Vanderbilt University.

Looking back, he believes the personalized support and opportunities he found at Elms helped shape his success.

“The communication skills I learned through my experiences at Elms helped me get this position at Vanderbilt”, Cameron said.

“Take the risk,” Cameron said. “If this is something you want to do, go all in. Elms gives you opportunities to get involved, grow, and make an impact. It certainly did for me.”
