Our students are able to flourish at Elms College for many reasons, not the least of which is the safe, welcoming environment the campus affords. Safety is of the utmost importance, but nowhere is impervious to some disruptions.
In order to create the safest campus possible we have taken a number of steps, including installing alarm systems in all dorms, call boxes in strategic locations around campus, and extra lighting to ensure that students never feel like they are walking down the proverbial dark alley while on campus.
Emergency Notification and Preparedness
Elms College is diligent about preparing for situations we never could have anticipated happening, and we recognize the important role that immediate communication plays in keeping all of us safe. As part of a comprehensive security plan, ElmsAlert, Elms College has added the Connect-ED system, which gives campus leaders and security professionals the ability to reach all students, faculty, and staff within minutes with information and updates during unforeseen events or emergencies, through phone calls, e-mails, and/or text messages. During a health scare, campus threat, or other event in the public interest, effective communication with students and staff has a direct impact on our safety.
Connect-Ed enables campus leaders to schedule, send, and track personalized voice messages to up to six phone numbers per person, and immediately sends messages via voice messages to home, work, and cell phones; text messages to cell phones, PDAs and other text-based devices; written messages to e-mail accounts; and messages to TTY/TDD receiving devices for the hearing impaired.
Preparedness means planning ahead, even for the unthinkable. The video below is a guide to the actions you would need to take if confronted by an active shooter on campus.

On Patrol, On Alert, and On Call for You
Campus safety officers provide 24-hour security coverage, seven days a week. At least one safety officer is on campus at all times to do routine patrols and respond to the safety needs of the campus community.
The in-house security staff has no powers of arrest, nor do they carry weapons. They are equipped with radios that communicate with the campus switchboard and the physical plant office. These radios have a telephone interconnect, so when extension 2278 is dialed on campus, a campus safety officer can intercept the call. When the in-house campus safety officers are alerted to a crime in progress, or when an emergency situation arises, they have been instructed to contact the appropriate Chicopee law enforcement agencies immediately.
When Chicopee police are employed by Elms College, they have full power of arrest, and carry weapons while on campus duty. They carry Chicopee police radios and are in communication with police headquarters at all times. They have the authority to respond personally to a crime in progress, and can radio directly to the city police for backup or emergency services.
All campus safety activity is logged and published monthly to our public safety logs page.
